Parks change between the day you book and the day you drive. A road closes for the season, a reservation window opens and sells out, a trail goes down for rockfall, a marina shuts a month early. This page is where we track those changes for the five parks we write planners for: Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Zion, Grand Canyon, and Rocky Mountain.

Every entry below was read on the park's own National Park Service alerts or conditions page during the check dated at the top of its section, and the source is linked in that section. When a park has nothing new that we can verify, we say so instead of filling the space. If you are mid trip, the park's own page is still the last word; this page is the early warning.

Yellowstone · Checked Oct 17, 2026

Yellowstone: the driving season is in its final weeks

  • Beartooth Highway is closed for the season. US-212 between Cooke City and Red Lodge, the Northeast Entrance's scenic approach, is done for the year. It typically reopens the Friday of Memorial Day weekend.
  • Most park roads close to regular vehicles in early November. After that, the one road that stays open to cars all year is the North Entrance at Gardiner through Tower Junction to Cooke City. Everything else waits for late April, with guided snowcoach and snowmobile travel running mid December to mid March.
  • Road status, straight from the park. Text 82190 to 888-777 for Yellowstone road alerts on your phone, or call the recorded line at (307) 344-2117 before you drive. Fall storms close individual roads on short notice even inside the open season.

Planning a trip around what is still open? Our four day Yellowstone route is built on the Grand Loop, the last roads to close.

Grand Teton · Checked Oct 17, 2026

Grand Teton: two roads closed, two 20 minute delays

  • Death Canyon Road and its trailhead are closed to all use, and so is the Moose-Wilson Road between the Laurance S. Rockefeller Preserve and Moose. Build your south end plans around Teton Park Road instead.
  • Construction delays of about 20 minutes on US-26/89/191 near Moran Junction and at the Teton Park Road roundabout by the Moose entrance, not counting the entrance station line itself.
  • Cottonwood Creek Picnic Area is closed for construction. Taggart Lake Trailhead is partially open with work ongoing, and Mormon Row is open with some building interiors closed.
  • Jackson Lake is winding down. The Signal Mountain and Colter Bay marinas and the Colter Bay and Leeks boat ramps are closed for the season. Signal Mountain boat ramp stays open, hand launch recommended, on loose cobbles below the ramp edge.
  • Bears are active across the park, near roads and trails, and the park's wildland fire danger rating is Moderate. Carry bear spray, keep 100 yards from bears, and check AirNow before a smoky day hike.

Source: National Park Service, Grand Teton Alerts and Current Conditions page (last updated by NPS Sep 30, 2026), read Oct 17, 2026. Our three day Grand Teton route already routes the south end on Teton Park Road, so the Moose-Wilson closure does not break it.

Zion · Checked Oct 17, 2026

Zion: a rockfall closure on the East Rim, shuttles still running

  • The East Rim Trail is partially closed after a large rockfall. Hidden Canyon is closed, and Observation Point cannot be reached from Zion Canyon at all right now; the only approach is from the east side.
  • The Zion Canyon shuttle is running its fall season. Free, no ticket or reservation needed, and the scenic drive stays shuttle only while it runs. Check the park's shuttle schedule page for the fall end date before you go.
  • The Narrows closes on flow, not on a calendar. The hike shuts when the Virgin River runs above 150 cubic feet per second, and under any flash flood warning. Check the USGS flow gauge the morning of your hike.
  • Toxic cyanobacteria is present in the Virgin River. Do not submerge your head and do not drink stream water anywhere in the park; use potable sources.
  • Campgrounds need reservations. Watchman Campground is open year round; South Campground and Lava Point Campground close seasonally for winter, and from mid March through late November the campgrounds fill almost every night.
  • Kolob Terrace Road's seasonal snow closure begins in the fall window at Maloney Hill, about a mile past the Hop Valley Trailhead, and runs into spring.

Source: National Park Service, Zion Current Conditions page (last updated by NPS Sep 16, 2026), read Oct 17, 2026. If Observation Point was on your list, our three day Zion route leans on Angels Landing and the Narrows instead, both unaffected by the rockfall closure.

Grand Canyon · Checked Oct 17, 2026

Grand Canyon: North Rim viewpoints closed through Nov 3

  • Cape Royal and Point Imperial roads are closed right now, from sunset Oct 15 through sunrise Nov 3, 2026, for critical road repair and rehabilitation work. That takes the North Rim's two marquee viewpoints off the table for the rest of October.
  • The North Rim is running a limited 2026 season. Select areas have reopened with a day use focus, limited services, and recovery work still ongoing. There is no potable water on the North Rim this season; bring everything you need.
  • South Rim roads are open: the South Entrance Road, Desert View Drive (SR 64), and Hermit Road. Hermit Road stays closed to private vehicles through November 30, with the free shuttle running it; private vehicles get it back December through February.
  • For same day closure news, the park's roads line is 928-638-7496. Winter storms can close South Rim roads temporarily while snow is cleared.

Sources: National Park Service, Grand Canyon Alerts and Conditions page (last updated by NPS Sep 1, 2026) and Weather, Webcams and Road Conditions page, both read Oct 17, 2026. Our three day Grand Canyon route is a South Rim route, so the North Rim repair closure does not touch it.

Rocky Mountain · Checked Oct 17, 2026

Rocky Mountain: timed entry is over after Oct 18

  • The general timed entry requirement ended Monday, Oct 12, 2026. No reservation is needed for general park entry for the rest of the season.
  • One day left on the Bear Lake Road version. Timed Entry + Bear Lake Road reservations are required 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sunday, Oct 18, 2026, then that ends too. The reservation itself is just the $2 Recreation.gov processing fee.
  • Old Fall River Road is closed to vehicles for the season. Starting Saturday, Oct 17, it reopens to bicycles, leashed pets, and walkers for the winter, on the road only, not the side trails.
  • Bear Lake Road stays open year round, and Colorado's traction law can be in effect at any time: properly rated tires with at least 3/16 inch of tread, or chains or another approved traction device.
  • One honest gap: the park does not post live road status on its website, Trail Ridge Road included. The park sends drivers to the message boards inside the park and its @RockyNPS feed, so treat any third party claim about Trail Ridge this week, ours included, as unconfirmed until you see one of those two.

Sources: National Park Service, Rocky Mountain Timed Entry Permit System page and Park Roads page, both read Oct 17, 2026. Our park pass tool and three day Rocky Mountain route assume no timed entry between mid October and late May, which is now the case again.
