Christmas in New York 2026
New York is the biggest Christmas trip in the country, about 8.1 million visitors forecast for the holiday season, and the hardest to plan well, because nothing here runs on the same calendar. The markets open and close on different dates, the famous free rink can cost the most, and the best lights in the city are in a Brooklyn neighborhood with no organizer, no tickets and no official start date. The market system, decoded
Four major markets, four different calendars. The single most useful fact in New York Christmas planning is the split at the end: Grand Central and Union Square close on December 24, while the Bryant Park shops run to January 3. Trips in the week after Christmas are planned around that line.

The tree, and the show
Rockefeller Center tree lighting: Wednesday, December 2, 2026
The tree arrives Saturday, November 7. The lighting is a one night spike: if it is the centerpiece of your trip, build the trip around that week, because tree date intent collapses the moment it passes. Viewing the lit tree is free all season after December 2.
Radio City Christmas Spectacular: Nov 4, 2026 to Jan 4, 2027
Tickets start at $50 at the box office, $55 online with the service charge. Most visitors pay more by date and seat, and peak December weekends cost materially more. Book the show first, then plan the days around it. Show and rink pages earn their keep through hotels and tours below; there is no honest ticket affiliate for the Spectacular itself, so we do not pretend otherwise.
Skating, priced by total cost
Admission prices lie. The number that matters is what a renter pays at the window, admission and rental together, and on that measure the famous free rink can be the most expensive of the three at peak.

Dyker Heights, without the bus
There is no organizer, no ticket and no official start date for the Dyker Heights lights. It is a residential tradition centered on 11th to 13th Avenues between 83rd and 86th Streets in Brooklyn. The pattern three independent sources agree on: first lights the day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 27, essentially everything on by December 1, displays through about December 30. Lights come on around 5pm; arrive around then.
The bus tours that serve it run about $63 a person, and they sell well, thousands of reviews well. The guide's Dyker chapter is the self-guided alternative: the walking loop, the transit in and out, the timing, the crowd strategy, and the two things the tours do not print, that there are no restrooms in the neighborhood and that the return trip needs planning too.

A note on Santaland
Macy's has indicated Santaland returns to Herald Square for 2026, but a usable reservation schedule had not been published when we checked in October 2026, and secondary sources disagree on the opening date. We are not printing a date we cannot stand behind. When Macy's publishes the schedule, it lands here and in the finder with a fresh stamp.
