Christmas in Chicago 2026
Chicago runs the largest Christmas market operation in the country, and the most confusing one, because there is no single market to plan around. There are three Christkindlmarkets, with different closing dates, different weekday hours and different crowd profiles, plus an opening weekend where the tree lighting, all three market openings and the lights parade land inside about thirty hours. The organizer counted 1.4 million visitors at Daley Plaza alone in 2024. This page holds what is verified now; the weekend guide that sequences it launches Friday, November 13.

The three market system
2026 is the market's 30th anniversary season. Choosing the wrong site costs a family a trip: Daley ends December 24, Wrigleyville runs to December 31, and Aurora, the largest of the three, is Thursdays to Sundays only.

The Daley Plaza capacity note, before you need it
In 2025 the city capped how many people could be inside Daley Plaza at once, lines wrapped the block, and organizers said attendance ran at about half of normal. No 2026 cap had been announced when we checked in October 2026. That does not mean there will not be one. The guide carries a verify before you go note on capacity, and the working advice stands either way: weekday, morning, early afternoon, and treat Wrigleyville and Aurora as the pressure valves, not the consolation prizes.
Opening weekend, sequenced
- Fri Nov 20, 6pm · The 113th City of Chicago Christmas Tree lights in Millennium Park. The tree stays up to January 10, 2027.
- Fri Nov 20 · All three Christkindlmarkets open. The Millennium Park Holiday Market opens for its three day run. The McCormick Tribune Ice Rink opens for the season. ZooLights opens at Lincoln Park Zoo.
- Sat Nov 21 · The Wintrust Magnificent Mile Lights Festival, its 35th anniversary: Lights Festival Lane 11am to 4pm, parade 5:30 to 7:30pm down Michigan Avenue, fireworks after, about 7:15pm. Free.

ZooLights, and the ticket logic
ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo: Nov 20, 2026 to Jan 3, 2027
Open 4:30 to 9pm, last entry 8pm, with more than 3 million lights. Closed Nov 26, Dec 1, 8, 15, 24 and 25. Tickets come in two shapes: fixed date at $7 to $12, and flexible at $20. Four Mondays are free, Nov 23 and 30 and Dec 7 and 14, and free still means a step: registration is required. The fixed versus flexible call, and which Monday to aim at, is a budget calculator preset, because it is arithmetic, not taste.
